What is natural handmade soap and how is it different from commercial soap?

Natural handmade soap is made in small batches by either the cold process or hot process method. We use the cold process method which means that no external heat is added during the soap making process. We only use natural ingredients such as plant-based oils, butters, essential oils, herbs, botanicals and clays. Our soaps are free from harsh chemicals and preservatives.

On the other hand, commercial soap is typically mass produced and made by using harsh detergents, colorants and preservatives. The glycerin in commercial soap is often removed and sold to be integrated into products such as lotion that treat dry skin. Sometimes a small amount of the extracted glycerin will be added back to the commercial soap for label appeal. Glycerin is a byproduct of making natural soap and natural soap retains all of its glycerin rich content which softens and nourishes the skin.

What is sodium hydroxide (also called lye) and why do you use it?

Real soap cannot be made without sodium hydroxide, also called lye. Soap goes through a process called saponification where the oils and lye are converted to soap. When this chemistry happens there is actually no lye remaining in the finished product!

Why does natural soap not smell as strong as commercial soap?

Are your soaps suitable for vegans?

Yes, most of our products are vegan friendly. However, please read the product label as we do make soaps using goat milk and honey.

Do you use palm oil in your soap?

Since palm oil production is contributing to rainforest destruction and extinction of animals we do not agree with using palm oil. All of our soaps are palm oil free.

Are your products environmentally friendly?

We make sustainability and being eco-friendly a priority. We are constantly working to eliminate as much waste as possible from production to packaging. We use recyclable and biodegradable materials as much as possible.

How long does natural soap last?

The longevity of soap depends on how often you shower, how many people use the bar and whether you dry out the soap between uses. Generally, soap should last three to four weeks if well cared for. For best results be sure to keep your natural soap on a drain dish and store unused soap in a cool, dry place. To increase the longevity of your soap use a washcloth, shower pouf or soap saver pouch versus rubbing the soap directly on the body.

How should I care for my natural soap?

We recommend using a soap draining dish to keep the soap dry between uses. Store unused soap in a cool, dry place with good air circulation. While handmade, natural soap actually gets better with age the scent may fade over time. The soap is still safe to use even though the scent may have faded. To prevent scent loss it is best to use natural soap as soon as possible.
